Using Medium As A Blog In 2021: Is It Worth It?
Is using Medium as a blog in 2021 worth it? As a longtime Medium user who’s coming up on four years of being on the platform, I must say it’s VERY worth it.
All those articles telling you to switch from Medium to Wordpress are significantly underestimating how great Medium is. I know many writers who make upwards of $10,000+ on this platform PER MONTH.
Not per year. Per month. And they write about whatever they want.
How much are you making with Wordpress right now?
Medium vs. Wordpress In 2021
The only thing that Wordpress has on Medium is that you own the content on your own Wordpress blog. On Medium? Not so much. Medium could fold up shop tomorrow and if all your blog posts are on it, you’re losing them all.
So the real question emerges..
Is Medium going to fold up shop tomorrow?
Absolutely not. They have two offices–one in New York and one in San Francisco. They have a global team of employees. They’re making revenue every single month from subscriptions and managing to pay writers at the same time.
Since 2016 I’ve heard the same excuses about using Medium as a blog.. That you don’t own your content. That they could hang you out to dry. Thousands of people have been predicting Medium’s failure since 2016. Guess what’s happened? They’ve thrived.
So now it’s time to ask the big question..
Is Using Medium As A Blog Worth It?
Yes it is. Is making $1,000 worth it? Is making $10,000 worth it? I’ve made more than $20,000 on Medium alone and received tens of thousands of email subscribers from the site, too.
If you want to learn how to start posting on Medium, I talk about that in this blog post, by the way.
Most of why I think using Medium as a blog is worth it is because of two big reasons..
1. It’s Worth It For The Email Subscribers
On Medium, you get reach. You actually get it pretty quickly if you learn how to publish in publications (which I can help with). So if you get reach, you can start to build your email list fairly quickly. After six months of constant publishing on Medium, I don’t see why you shouldn’t be able to get to 1,000 email subscribers.
With 1,000 email subscribers, you’re ready to sell your first product.
I bet if you started a Wordpress blog, you’d be nowhere near 1,000 email subscribers even after 6 months of work. I’m not saying Wordpress isn’t worth it, I’m simply saying that on Medium, you can grow your email list and brand much faster.
2. It’s Worth It For The Money
Medium is also worth it for the money. In essence, you’re getting paid to build your brand and build an email list. How awesome is that? I think most beginners can expect to make about $100-$200 per month on Medium after they write their first 30 or so articles.
Stop Thinking Using Medium As A Blog Isn’t Worth It
Medium has been the home for my blog posts since 2016. I haven’t regretted it for one second. This platform has given me the freedom to travel, live in another country, and grow as a creator.
I think you should strongly consider using Medium as a blog as well.
