What Does 1st Mean On LinkedIn Next To Someone's Name?

So, what does 1st mean on LinkedIn?

You’ve seen the numbers next to people’s names, right? Here, I’ll give you an example.

Boom. What does the 1st mean on LinkedIn? If you’re wondering what that number is, you’ll be tickled to find out there’s also “2nd” and “3rd’s” on LinkedIn as well!

Look down below with me.

So, for the last time, what does 1st and 2nd mean on LinkedIn?

Let’s get into all of this.

What Does 1st Mean on LinkedIn?

The “1st” just means that you’re directly connected with someone on LinkedIn. They are one of your connections.

Think of it as a “friend” on Facebook. LinkedIn has to be different and “business-y” so they just call it a “connection.”

Also, you can send a message to every person you’re directly connected to on LinkedIn, which is really nice.

The official name for these people are “1st-degree connections.”

That’s the answer to the “What does 1st mean on LinkedIn” question.

What Does 1st And 2nd Mean On LinkedIn?

Okay, so we know what 1st means, but what does 1st and 2nd mean on LinkedIn?

The “2nd” just means that someone is a second-degree connection. These people are connected to the people that you are connected with.

You are NOT directly connected to people with a “2nd” next to their name.

If you want to connect with these people for whatever reason, you can go to their profile page and send them a request by clicking on the “Connect” button.

That’s what the 2nd means on LinkedIn.

What Does 3rd Mean On LinkedIn?

Okay so we covered “what does 1st mean on LinkedIn?” Now it’s time to talk about the “3rd,” too.

3rd, if you’re recognizing any pattern here, signifies a 3rd-degree connection.

These are people who are connected to your 2nd degree connections.

In my experience you can visit their profile, click on the “More” button (pictured above) and send them a connection request if you want.

The 6 Degrees Of Separation On LinkedIn

Clearly LinkedIn took a hint from the “6 degrees of separation” idea and built it into their own platform.

The idea is that all people are six, or fewer, social connections away from each other.

It was an idea popularized in a 1929 short story by Frigyes Karinthy, where a group of people play a game trying to connect any person in the world to themselves by a chain of five others.

While LinkedIn only goes up to 3rd-degree connections, they could easily go to 5th or 6th degree connections to make this more fun.

How To Grow Your Connections On LinkedIn

I wrote up a guide about how to grow your connections on LinkedIn. I’d love for you to check it out. If you want to grow a following on LinkedIn for any reason, this is a great tutorial for you.

It’s all based on creating great content and connecting with the 2nd and 3rd connections that “liked” it.

It’s how I’ve managed to get over 14,000 followers on LinkedIn so far.

In Conclusion

I hope you understand a little bit better what the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd means on LinkedIn. I hope you also try to go out there and make new connections on this beautiful platform.

Anyway, that’s the answer to the “What does 1st mean on LinkedIn” question.
